Anger Management Therapy: Understanding What’s Underneath the Anger

You can understand what sits underneath anger and practice a different response when things get intense.

About this service

Anger Management Therapy

Individual therapy for anger, irritability, frustration, emotional reactivity, conflict, shutdown, and difficulty controlling responses.

I provide individual therapy for adults who struggle with anger, irritability, frustration, emotional reactivity, or difficulty controlling how they respond when they become overwhelmed. This may include arguments, yelling, shutting down, relationship conflict, road rage, workplace problems, or feeling angry much of the time.

I do not view anger as automatically bad or something that simply needs to be eliminated. Anger gives us information and may signal that a boundary has been crossed, something feels unfair, or something important feels threatened.

What it is

Individual therapy for adults who struggle with anger, irritability, frustration, emotional reactivity, or difficulty controlling how they respond when overwhelmed.

Who it serves

Adults at different stages of change and recovery, including people who are unsure whether they want complete abstinence or are simply recognizing that a substance or behavior is becoming a problem.

How it starts

I begin by understanding what the behavior does for you, what need it meets, what feeling it quiets, and what happens immediately before and afterward.

If your concerns are connected to past experiences, trauma therapy for adults in Missouri can provide a broader starting point.

Common experiences

What You May Be Experiencing

  • “I’m angry all the time.”

  • “I have a really short fuse.”

  • “Little things set me off.”

  • “I go from zero to a hundred before I even realize it’s happening.”

Anger treatment

Anger can tell us something important

Therapy focuses on understanding the person’s individual anger cycle: what triggers it, what happens in thoughts and body as anger builds, what emotions may be underneath it, how they typically respond, and what happens afterward.

We work on recognizing anger earlier while developing practical ways to regulate emotions, tolerate frustration, communicate needs, establish boundaries, manage conflict, and choose how to respond rather than allowing anger to choose for them.

Understanding anger and choosing a different response

Anger is not the same for everyone, and the reason behind it matters. Treatment is tailored to the individual and what they want to change.

Responding with intention

Anger does not have to choose for you

When anger is connected to trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, substance use, grief, relationship experiences, or chronic stress, we can also address the underlying concern rather than treating anger as though it exists by itself.

The goal isn’t to create someone who never gets angry. It is to understand the anger, listen to what it is trying to communicate, and learn how to express and respond to it without allowing it to damage the things and people that matter most.
