What it is

Making room for what happens afterward

Critical Incident Stress Management is a structured crisis-intervention approach used following critical incidents. It provides structured early support following potentially traumatic events. It is not individual psychotherapy, an operational critique, an investigation, or a determination of who handled an incident correctly or incorrectly.

CISM is part of a continuum of support, not a replacement for therapy and not an assumption that everyone involved in a critical incident needs therapy. Individual therapy may be appropriate afterward for someone who needs additional support, but it is a separate service from the CISM intervention.

Who it serves

Law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS/paramedics, dispatchers, corrections professionals, and others working in emergency response and public safety.

How support is structured

A structured process with room for private support

Structured group work

The approved program description includes structured group work, education, practical coping strategies, and connection with others who understand first-response work.

Additional Support After a Critical Incident

CISM does not assume that everyone involved in a critical incident needs therapy. If a participant later wants or needs additional support, individual therapy may be considered separately as part of the broader continuum of care.

What the process makes room for

The structured process includes a factual review of the critical incident, the thoughts and reactions connected to it, stress responses, education, practical coping strategies, and the transition back into everyday functioning. This review is not an operational critique or investigation. You do not have to share more than you are ready or willing to share.
